The HM2R has successfully held its Research Standards workshop. This was from  September 19 to 20, 2017.

The workshop was a venue for mentoring and discussing the latest research resources and innovations in the field of Research Standards particularly ‘’Publication ethics and ethical use of human subjects’’.

This workshop served its purpose of mentoring and training participants from diverse backgrounds including academia and professional backgrounds. This was the organization’s fourth research training workshop.

The research workshop was facilitated by Professor Steven H. Miles. He is a Professor of Medicine and Bioethics and Chair in Bioethics at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. He is also the Moderator for Bioethics International, a group of 600 bioethics faculty from 55 countries, Affiliate Faculty for the Law School’s Concentration in Health Law and Bioethics and Board certified in Internal Medicine.

The House of Mentoring & Research Resources (HM2R) from June 19 to 23, 2017 successfully held two research workshops.

The first workshop was “Application of Bibliographic Tools in Literature Review and Manuscript Preparation” and the second, “Data Analysis Using SPSS.” Certificates were presented to participants, facilitators and coordinators.

HM2R is a major venue for mentoring and discussion of the latest research resources and innovations in the field of scientific research attracting a high number of high quality trainers and participants from academia and professional backgrounds.

This 2 day workshop for H2MR was held at the University of Ghana, School of Public Health on May 28 and 29^th 2016.

It was well attended with 36 participants including researchers, doctoral and masters students, faculty and educators.

Day One

Founder and facilitator, Dr Amos Laar delivered the opening speech where he highlighted future workshops planned for H2MR.

The session began with Dr Amos Laar facilitating an engaging discussion on Basic Concepts and Methods in Research. Participants were actively engaged in thinking through the process of scientific research. Participants were able to ask questions and have meaningful responses from our able facilitators.

Dr Adolphina Addo- Lartey followed with a thorough discussion on Research Questions and Study Objectives. During this stirring discourse, participants gained hands on experience on how to write study objectives that are measureable, specific and directly related to the research questions under study. Participants came prepared with research topics and questions and therefore were able to work on their individual projects and interests.

Dr John Ganle facilitated the subsequent discussion on Problem Statement, Rationale and Justification for research studies. During this session, workshop participants were able to further define the problem statement of their individual research topics with the help of a highly trained and experienced facilitator.

Mrs. Helena Baidoo, from the Institutional Review Board of the world renowned Nogouchi Memorial Institute facilitated the discussion on ethical research standards and requirements. All participant questions about the ethical considerations for their research projects and any others were answered.

Our visiting speaker from the University of Sheffield, Dr Robert Akparibo facilitated the discussion on literature and systematic reviews. In a demonstrative and practical manner, he walked participants through the process of searching for literature in an effective systematic way. Participants with laptop computers were able to follow demonstrations on how to find journal articles and reference managing techniques and tools.

Day Two

Mr. Dwomoh Duah began the second day with a two hour in-depth discussion on Study Hypothesis, Sampling and Sample Size. This segment allowed participants to engage in actual sampling estimators and calculations. Discussions and calculations on power and its statistical significance in developing a research project.

Dr Tony Danso-Appiah followed up with a discussion on study design and its importance. Building on principles of epidemiology, he helped participants develop their knowledge further by working to design their research topics.

Dr Robert Akparibo delivered the last talk on Mixed Methods study design. This was especially helpful for participants who were interested in study methodic that combined two or more types of study designs.

Wrap-up and Adjourn

The 2 day workshop ended with certificates of participation and completion being awarded to each participant. Facilitators were given certificated and tokens of appreciation for their time and support. Dr Amos Laar concluded with a few words about the next workshop and HM2R’s future capacity building and mentoring opportunities.

The workshop “Introduction to Research Methods” of the HM2R, was held successfully in May/June 2016. This was the organization’s second research training workshop. Certificates were presented to participants and facilitators.

HM2R’s first training workshop was on Paperless Data Collection which was also very successful with certificates being presented to participants.

Open Data Kit (ODK) system training
Open Data Kit (ODK), is android-based software on mobile devices. This technology facilitates paperless data collection and real time transmission of data to a cloud-based for access globally. Data harvested in excel are exportable to various statistical packages for analysis and decision making.

In line with HM2R?s objective of providing mentoring/capability training in research?and pedagogy, HM2R facilitated the training (Trainers of Trainers) to equip the selected few with the competencies to execute paperless data collection initiatives (paperless data collection, and supervision). This first cohort of trainees will serve as field workers in a forthcoming research at the School of Public Health.

The training was conducted at the University of Ghana, School of Public Health, Accra ? Ghana, and facilitated by HM2R. The training was conducted during weekends and lasted four weekends with intensive practical and theory sessions lasting about five hours per session. A total of six trainees were involved: Mr Dave Quarshie, Mr Solomon Tetteh, Mr Ernest Amoah Ampah, Mr Nathaniel Coleman, Mr Bernard Owusu Amponsah, and Miss Angelina Andoh. Mr Aliyu Mohammed Research Director at ISOTECH Research Consult and a doctoral student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology was the master Trainer.

Certificates of successful completion were awarded to deserving participants.
